Science: Young Blood Contains The Elixir Of Life


Rather alarming, isn’t it, the US research reported in the journal Nature which suggests old people can be rejuvenated by the blood of the young. It’s a kind of metaphor, really. But it’s not as though the idea is new and I’m not just thinking of the Twilight series. There’s a whole book, by Richard Sugg, on this theme: Corpse Medicine.

The Italian humanist, Marsilio Ficino, was one of several scholars and physicians to think human blood was a veritable elixir of life; he suggested the elderly could restore their vitality by sucking blood from the arms of a healthy youth.


Let’s pause for a moment while we consider some well-known wrinkled billionaires who may, sometime soon, start showing signs of unexpected vigour…
